Director Statement:
The concept for ‘Sometime Else’ was originally conceived from an online news article written about the possibility in the not-too-distant future, of peoples’ dreams being recorded overnight, to then be watched back once awake. With the explosion in popularity of virtual reality in recent years; and with tech startups hoping to merge human brains with robotics, the idea of reviewing dreams or memories didn’t seem as far-fetched when I decided to commit words to the page.
Mental health and wellbeing are at the forefront of discussion in today’s society; and rightly so. The idea of revisiting memories for therapeutic reasons is important on several levels. Namely, the idea that someone like the character Josh, could revisit past traumas and face them head-on to overcome as an adult, is something that I find incredibly thought-provoking.
Equally, the Therapist’s role in this story is pivotal; as without her calming, professional demeanour, Josh’s memories could be intentionally or unintentionally suppressed. All memories, however new, will fade with the passage of time and in the case of wild or fabricated recollections being potentially utilised by a patient, it is the job of a therapist to provide a safe space to allow the healing to begin - and for the truth to come to light.
I invite you to ask yourselves the question; can Josh’s memory be trusted?
“…a clever short which would sit well amongst any of Charlie Brooker's best and darkest [Black Mirror] episodes.”
